Drs. Bruce Albrecht and Dana Ambler offer an egg donor program at their Englewood, CO, clinic. While a deeply personal choice, becoming an egg donor can bring considerable joy to a family struggling to conceive. Many women who are otherwise unable to have children are given an opportunity to become a mother.
Dr. Ahlbrecht has been practicing for over 30 years and Dr. Ambler has been practicing for over 10 years. Both our doctors offer a wide range of assisted reproductive technology to make sure that every patient stays safe and comfortable during their treatment.
What Is the Egg Donor Program?
For millions of woman who struggle to conceive, an egg donor program is their best hope for having children. Donors may participate in the program for altruistic or financial reasons, but the impact they have on the recipient's life is hard to understate. By donating eggs, you can help someone start a family.
Who is Eligible for the Program?
Good candidates for this program are typically:
- Between the ages of 21 and 32
- At a healthy BMI (18.5 to 29.9)
- Not drug users
- Experiencing regular menstrual cycles
- Not on hormonal contraception
If you have recently received a tattoo or piercing, you will need a signed letter from the shop explicitly stating that proper sanitation guidelines were followed. Otherwise, you will likely need to wait at least six months to a year before you can qualify for donation.
Egg Donor Timeline
Before you can enter the egg donor program, you will need to establish your candidacy through a series of medical tests and screenings. These tests, which can include blood tests, pelvic exams, and psychological evaluations, are used to ensure that you are in good health and are mentally prepared to undergo the procedure. Once the testing is complete, legal experts will draft contracts to be signed by both you and the recipients.
Egg Donor Selection By Recipients
Once your candidacy has been established, your photos and medical details will be used to make a personal profile. Recipients will use our clinic’s collection of profiles to choose a suitable donor.
Donor Egg Retrieval Process
Once your profile has been chosen by a recipient, you will undergo a process that synchronizes your menstrual cycle with that of the recipient. A hormone will be given to stimulate egg production so several can be retrieved at once. Menstrual synchronization usually takes a few weeks to complete while egg stimulation takes around 10 days to complete. The final step is egg retrieval.
Egg retrieval is an outpatient surgical procedure that takes around 30 minutes. While you will be able to return home after the procedure, it is advised that donors relax for the remainder of that day.
After the Egg Donation
As with any surgical procedure, there is a small risk for complications, which can include infection and vaginal bleeding. One of our doctors will discuss these rare but potential risks with you in detail before you return home.
Your menstrual period should return around 10 days after surgery. As your hormones return to baseline levels, you may experience mood swings, bloating, cramping, and spotting. You will also remain fertile for about a month afterward.
